Empowering students to build their German vocabulary

vobot German is a mobile app with a full learner’s dictionary plus vocabulary trainer. The app includes over 30,000 German words with translations into English, as well as nearly 100,000 sample sentences, so learners always practice vocabulary in an authentic context. Target learning levels: A1-B2 (Novice to Advanced)

The app is perfect for educational use as it contains no advertising, requires no registration and stores no personal data. Learners can try it out for free with all German entries starting with “v” (from “vage” to “Vulkan”.

Spelling matters!

Inspired by the “spelling bee”, we chose the bee for the vobot logo. An important part of language learning is also getting the spelling right. The easiest exercises in vobot are based on multiple choice, but as learners have successfully practiced a word a few times, they move on to partial and then full spelling of the word. A word will only be counted as learned and moved to the “Learned vocabulary” list after it has been fully spelled in the correct form for the given context.

How does it work?

vobot German search screen
Learners look up words by typing them into the search field.

vobot German review learning list screen

vobot German spelling exercise screen
They practice their words in a series of progressively difficult exercises.

Individual users can purchase access to the full dictionary of over 30,000 German words for a one-time fee of approx. €28 (price varies depending on country, taxes & exchange rate). Ask us about our considerably discounted classroom/school licenses in a non-binding quote.

What kind of exercises are in the app?

vobot German is highly motivating for your DAF/DAZ learners as it provides a safe space for them to explore and practice. vobot German also makes learning vocabulary more efficient – because learners only focus on what is relevant to them and practice the words they have trouble with in a fun little quiz. Exercises range from multiple-choice to spelling, and adapt in difficulty to the learner’s progress. Here is an example of the exercise progression with the word “Vokabel”.

The learner has to identify the correct English translation.

The learner has to identify the missing German word.

The learner has to identify the correct definition in German.

The learner has to spell the correct form of the German word in the given sample sentence.

Each exercise also provides tips in case the learner gets stuck, including up to half the letters in the spelling exercise. In order for the word to be counted as “learned”, however, they will have to spell the word one time fully without using the tip function.

The app is constantly improving, e.g. as we add new features like time-spaced repetition and audio. Already now, it offers learners a highly individualized and contextualized way to build their German vocabulary.

Sharing progress

Thanks to the immediate feedback vobot German gives students, it’s the perfect tool for them to learn without supervision, e.g. outside the classroom. How do you know your students are using it? At any time, students can share their progress with you via e-mail or WhatsApp. You will receive a PDF showing all the words they have successfully learned over a certain period of time.

For instance, assign them to learn at least 100 words by the end of the month or semester. That’s all you have to do! Once they submit their progress, you see at a glance what they have successfully learned.

Using vobot in your class

While vobot is ideal for self-learning, it can also be used in class. For instance, it can be used as a dictionary during reading exercises – and one extra click will add a word to a student’s learning list. Another benefit is that students who read faster can use vobot’s vocabulary exercises to continue working quietly while other students finish reading.

Used in groups or pairs, students can add words as they read out loud to each other, and then do the vocabulary exercises as a team.

vobot can also support students when they read at home. You can tell them that you expect them to know all the words from a reading – and it won’t be that hard for them, because they can look all the words up as well as practice them in the app.

As you can see, the makers of vobot German have also worked extensively as teachers, so we have come up with lots of ways you can integrate the app in your curriculum. We have more ideas like these plus step-by-step instructions for how to use them in your class. Send us an e-mail and ask us about our free teacher’s package!
